Of course, in those distant times, its meaning was very different from what we mean by design today. More than two centuries remained before the advent of industrial production, and the Italian expression “disegno intero” (concept, idea of ​​a work of art) was related exclusively to art, meaning the divine inspiration that descended on the artist.

The Oxford Dictionary of 1588 is more specific: design is “a human-conceived plan or outline for something to be realized, the first draft of a future work of art.” KEYWORDS – “work of art”. Let’s remember.

With the development of capitalism in the 19th century, the first industrial designers, of course, had no time for art. They solved the problem of unification of scientific and engineering knowledge. This was the case in the automotive industry until 1927, when, for the first time in history, Cadillac invited a designer to design the exterior of the LaSalle. Moreover, for this purpose, a new division was created, which had no analogues in Europe – Cadillac Art

Many outstanding ideas came from Earle’s division. The Cadillac Aerodynamic Coupe is the first concept car designed specifically for the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. It differed from all other cars in the world in that for the first time the “spare wheel” was not attached to the outside of the body, but moved to the luggage compartment.

The glorious history of the Cadillac brand includes dozens of equally significant achievements that have occurred in the following years. In parallel with the development of the automotive industry, the improvement of technology, the perception of design objects by people also changed. Previously, the consumer had a good idea of ​​how art differed from design.

Art was in museums and galleries, design in stores and shopping malls. However, at the end of the century, this view changed radically. Indeed, how do we choose things when buying? Do we always do this with pragmatic considerations, technical specifications, etc.? The most relevant studies indicate that more and more often our choice is directly predetermined by design, everything else fades into the background.

That is practically indistinguishable from our perception of art, when the artist’s picture for completely inexplicable reasons begins to be liked. It is not surprising that many of the works of famous industrial designers today are officially considered to be works of art. They exist in a single copy or in a very limited edition, cost fabulous money and are sold at auctions.

One such piece is, for example, the Lockheed Lounge chaise lounge by renowned Australian designer Mark Newson. This is the highest price to date for a design by a living author. The perception of design as an art was reflected in the automotive industry, which has always been at the forefront of industrial design development. Visitors to the 1999 Detroit Auto Show, especially those fortunate enough to be at the forefront of the presentation of the Cadillac Evoq concept car, will probably never forget the thrill of seeing a true masterpiece. Like Le Corbusier’s projects that indicated the development of world architecture for decades to come, this experimental car marked a direction that can only be called “Cadillac style”.
